How to Treat Sores in the Nose
A sore in the nose can be very irritating and downright painful. Not only is it uncomfortable but it might also include redness and swelling that can be very unsightly. Nose sores can also interfere with breathing.
Why Sores Occur
To treat sores in the nose, first consider why they happen. They are often the result of bacterial infections, as the nose is a filter for the airways and traps dirt, dust, germs, and bacteria to keep it from entering the lungs. In some cases it might be a small ulcer as the lining of the nose ruptures due to sneezing or other pressure.
In most cases nasal sores will go away on their own, and it may be best to simply leave them alone and let them heal. Picking at them often makes them worse and postpones healing. However, recurring sores may need medical intervention. Certain boils inside the nose are treated with antibiotics and other conditions also need medication.
A breakout of the herpes virus can cause sores around the nose as well as the mouth. You may notice pain, redness and swelling in the nose and mouth. Severe allergies can lead to painful swelling of the nose as the nasal cavities are trying to filter out the allergens and irritants. Minor irritations of the nose can be treated at home. You might put some ice in a clean small towel and hold it against your nose around the swelling. This will bring it down and relieve any pain you’re experiencing. During wintertime, you need to keep your sinus cavities moist so dry skin won’t cause irritations and minor cuts. Add a humidifier to your house and office, and put one in the bedroom so you have overnight relief.
Avoid using nasal sprays as these dry out the sinus cavities and avoid irritants like perfumes and household cleaners. If you have allergies, add a filter to your home’s furnace or air conditioning system or use portable air filters. It’s also good to ensure your diet is bolstering your immune system so you have fewer colds and sinus infections in the wintertime; eat lots of vitamin C-rich foods and leafy greens especially as the weather turns colder.
